One Million Lights to participate in Whole Foods Market Palo Alto Earth Day 2009 celebration

One Million Lights to promote awareness of innovative solar lights as an alternative to dangerous kerosene lamps

Wednesday, April 22, 2009 — PALO ALTO, CA – One Million Lights has been selected as one of 25 South Bay organizations to participate in Whole Foods Market’s Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 25th, at Whole Foods Market in Palo Alto, California. The downtown Palo Alto store is partnering with socially conscious organizations to celebrate Earth Day and raise awareness of social and environmental issues in the local community.

One Million Lights is a Palo Alto‐based non‐profit with a goal of distributing one million rechargeable solar lights to help replace harmful and polluting kerosene lamps around the world. One Million Lights is also committed to building local consciousness of environmental and social issues that can be addressed by clean energy solutions, such as replacing kerosene lamps with solar powered lamps.

“Palo Alto is a very engaged community and we are anticipating strong participation in our Earth Day celebration”, said Perrie Pagnotta, Marketing Team Leader at the Palo Alto Whole Foods Market. “One Million Lights is a perfect complement to help celebrate Earth Day because it aligns with our core value of caring about our community and environment”, she added.

Whole Foods Market is committed to working with the local community and to making a difference in people’s lives. “By distributing solar lights and replacing kerosene lamps we are helping children study at night and helping adults generate more income. The goal is to ultimately help families break through the cycle of poverty”, said Anna Sidana, Founder and CEO of One Million Lights. She further stated that her desire is to make social and environmental learning an integrated part of local middle and high school students’ education so that children grow up aware of these issues.

“Wouldn’t it be great if every child were able to make a positive difference in someone’s life?” mused Sidana.
