Over 15 million Filipinos still live without access to electricity. They live in off-grid, rural communities often located either deep in the mountains or near the ocean, making it very difficult to reach them. Energizer and the One Million Lights Philippines team will be bringing them solar lights, among other items that will help them on a daily basis.
The Dark They Know Well
For many of these people who do not have electricity, their days are dictated by the rise and fall of the sun. At 4:30 in the morning, when only a dim ray of light can be seen across the horizon, villagers are already up, making their way towards the fields to farm or the coasts.

About 80% of the country’s poor live in rural areas, which are located deep in the mountains and the rice fields. Most of these areas do not have electricity and depend on dangerous toxic fumes of kerosene lanterns.

Rebuilding the Philippines
The Philippines struggles to rebuild after Typhoon Washi. One Million Lights provides 300 lights for the victims of this disaster.
n December, Typhoon Washi swept through the Philippines, claiming two cities in northern Mindanao, and more than 1,200 lives. Flash floods and mudslides washed away entire homes, with residents still inside. On the morning of December 18, the people of Cagayan De Oro found only mud and debris where their villages once stood. 10,000 homes were destroyed, and 60,000 Filipinos were homeless.
